The Howard Brent Turner Memorial Fountain

"The Brountain" is located in the Meditation Garden at the Hope & Healing Center,
which is a wellness facility run by the non-profit organization called the
Church Health Center Wellness in Memphis.

Thank you to the many generous friends and family whom have made this beautiful memorial possible. We were blesssed by Brent's presence and are honored by your support.

While we successfully reached our projected goal for this fountain, any further donations would help to maintain not only the fountain, as it runs continuously, but also the surrounding gardens, which provide a tranquil retreat within downtown Memphis.

Dear Friends,

As most of you know, we lost our friend and former classmate Brent Turner over three years ago. Since then, there has been a great deal of thought and discussion among his friends of a way we might honor Brent’s memory. We are excited, therefore, to announce a project that will serve as a lasting tribute to Brent and to ask for your support in bringing the project to fruition.

What is it?

Our project will dedicate to Brent's memory a fountain to be located in the Meditation Garden of the Hope and Healing Center, a beautiful facility associated with the Memphis Church Health Center. Those of you who live in Memphis may be familiar with the amazing work being done by the Church Health Center (CHC).

Founded in 1987 by Dr. Scott Morris, the Church Health Center provides medical, wellness, and outreach services. The CHC Clinic provides primary health care services to the working people, including self-employed artists and musicians, with jobs but without health care coverage. The Church Health Center depends on the incredible generosity of hundreds of primary care and subspecialty medical doctors who donate their time to see patients of the CHC. The Church Health Center’s wellness programming is based in its Hope and Healing Center, where clients nurture their physical and spiritual lives through a wide range of services and programs for all ages. I encourage anyone who is interested to visit www.churchhealthcenter.org or, even better, to visit the actual facilities.

Another friend of the CHC initiated the project by commissioning the fountain's sculpture by environmental artist, Betsy Damon, specifically for the Meditation Garden at Hope and Healing Center. Our specific task funds the engineering and construction of the fountain's sculpture in place. For our effort, the fountain will be permanently dedicated to Brent.

What is our purpose?

Our inspiration is threefold. First, we loved Brent and seek to perpetuate his memory, preferably in a manner that contributes to the well-being and happiness of others. Second, we wish to honor the Turner family – particularly his parents, Dr. Jan and Jenni Turner, and his sister Jannell Turner – and communicate to them how significantly Brent touched the hearts and minds of others. Third, we want to support the important work of the Church Health Center. We note that both Dr. and Mrs. Turner are enthusiastic supporters of the CHC and have both volunteered their time there. In our admittedly biased view, any one of these three factors, by itself, merits consideration of support.

What is our goal?

We are seeking to fund the construction and installation of the fountain, the total cost of which is $55,000. We are asking for your support in helping us reach that goal. The accompanying donation materials detail how and where a prospective commitment will be handled. All donations will be tax-deductible. Should we be so fortunate as to exceed our goal, any excess funds will go toward maintenance of the fountain as well as to operating support of the Church Health Center. The names of those who commit $100 or more will be prominently displayed on a plaque accompanying the fountain. That being said, we appreciate and value any commitment, no matter the amount.

Finally, we hope to celebrate the memorial fountain with a dedication ceremony, followed by a reception. We hope to hold these events in the spring or early summer of 2010. We will keep you informed about our progress and look forward to sharing more concrete details. We thank you for your consideration and hope that we get a chance to see you in the months to come.
